"When I used to meet people for the first time, I went through a phase of not admitting to playing the recorder. I would tell them that I played the violin or the flute so I wouldn't get bombarded with exclamations and a myriad of questions, such as they didn’t think it was a real instrument, how could I make any sort of living from it and can I play Three Blind Mice?
Originally I did want to make a huge impact on the early music world and stay in that musical genre. However life and musical experiences taught me and challenged me to explore, search and look beyond the boundaries, the rules and the opinions of others. I started to listen to myself, to my own thoughts and ideas. I love listening to DJ Krush, Nine Inch Nails, Faith No More, Massive Attack & Queens of the Stone Age (to name a few), seeing live concerts.....a long way from the early music world.
I came to realise that there is so much more to music and to my instrument of choice, the recorder, I had not even considered as a possibility. In order to expand the possibilities of what the recorder is capable of I knew that I had to find my niche, break as many rules and stretch as many musical boundaries as possible.
If I can convince my audience, then there are no limits to what I can do and what I can play. I’m only limited by my own fears.
The recorder has had a negative reputation associated with it for too long and I am here to change people’s perceptions of this misunderstood instrument. It is one of the most challenging, adaptable and versatile instruments one can play. There are many varieties, tunings, sizes, models and makes of recorders that can be used for many different performances and music styles, not to mention the electronic recorder and the equipment you can connect it through to create the most amazing and indescribable sounds and effects.
I hope you can open up to what both the recorder and I can do."
